SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP): World’s most popular social media network Facebook will use fact-checking program for photos and videos as well as news articles to fight against fake news and misinformation on its service. Facebook Technology to remove Fake News.

The company will use human reviewers and technology they will try to combat “misinformation in these new visual formats.” Facebook will label images or video found to be untrue or misleading as such. Facebook views misinformation in posts as falling into one of three categories: manipulated or fabricated, out of context, and text or audio claim. The same false claim can appear as an article headline, as text over a photo or as audio in the background of a video… In order to fight misinformation, we have to be able to fact-check it across all of these different content types.”

How the Technology works ?

fact-checkers use visual verification techniques such as reverse image searching and analyzing image metadata to check the veracity of photos and videos.

Mark Zuckerberg will use a tactic called optical character recognition (OCR) to extract text from photos to compare that text to headlines from fact-checkers’ articles.

The company will also be analyzing comments on certain posts in order to determine if the photo or video contains misinformation.





Facebook also will consider the public opinion about an image or video which contains  misinformation
